ERYTHROPOIETIN - 1
History:
1878 – a feedback loop between the bone marrow and tissue was postulated.
Early 1900’s – erythropoietin named as the hormonal agent that stimulates erythropoiesis when tissue hypoxia exists.
1977 – erythropoietin isolated and tested.
1985 – erythropoietin gene is cloned.
1987 – recombinant erythropoietin available in Europe
1989 – FDA approves recombinant EPO.
1998 – recombinant EPO found in team competing in Tour de France
