Phases of Anaerobic Glycolysis
1st phase:
Begins with glucose and ends with glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate
Hexokinase – lowest activity of all glycolytic enzymes
Hexokinase requires Mg++
Hexokinase deficiency inherited and causes hereditary nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia (HNSHA)
2nd phase:
Begins with glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and ends with 3-phosphoglycerate
Both the methemoglobin reductase pathway and the Rapaport-Luebering pathway in this phase.
3rd  phase:
Begins with 3-phosphglycerate and ends with lactate
Pyruvate kinase deficiency is inherited and is the most common cause of HNSHA.
