Definition:
A hematologic disorder characterized by the production and peripheral proliferation of immature, large, and dysfunctional erythrocytes.
Etiology:
Root cause:
Impaired DNA synthesis
Deficiencies:
Vitamin B12  (cobalamin)
Folate (folic acid)
Role of B12 and folate in DNA synthesis:
Vit B12 role:
Acts as a cofactor in transfer of methyl group from 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to homocysteine converting it to methionine
 folate role:
Folate needed for cycle to supply tetrahydrofolate the methyl group acceptor
