Extravascular Hemolysis - 2
Heme reacts with heme oxygenase to form biliverdin + carbon monoxide
Important facts:
Biliverdin converted to bilirubin and then released into plasma where it binds to albumin. It is now called indirect or unconjugated bilirubin.
In the liver the enzyme glucuronyl transferase conjugates bilirubin with glucuronic acid to form conjugated bilirubin (bilirubin diglucuronide) or (direct bilirubin)
In hemolytic disorders the life span of red cell can be shortened by 15 – 20 days without anemia seen
If hemolytic disorders shortens the life span of red cell more than 15 – 20 days anemia will be seen
