Some free hemoglobin is passed through the glomerular membrane where it is reabsorbed by proximal tubular cells
Important facts:
When more than 1.4 mg/minute passes through the kidney the hemoglobin will pass out in urine (hemoglobinuria)
Some of the iron released by breakdown of hemoglobin in the tubular cells will remain in the cells and these cells are then sloughed off in urine
If Prussian blue stain used on urine sediment these iron laden cells can be detected (hemosiderinuria)
