Some
free hemoglobin is passed through the glomerular membrane
where it is reabsorbed by proximal tubular cells
When
more than 1.4 mg/minute passes through the kidney
the hemoglobin will pass out in urine (hemoglobinuria)
Some
of the iron released by breakdown of hemoglobin in
the tubular cells will remain in the cells and these cells
are then sloughed off in urine
If
Prussian blue stain used on urine sediment these iron
laden cells can be detected (hemosiderinuria)
