Confirmation of Negative DAT
When the DAT is negative it must be confirmed by adding “check cells”.
Check cells are red blood cells that have had antibodies (IgG) attached to them.
If visible agglutination occurs it confirms that the AHG has not been neutralized and that the DAT is truly negative.
If the red cells do not agglutinate it indicates the AHG was not working and either new AHG is needed or the patient’s cells need to be washed more than 3 times.
