Reducing Agent Test
Principle of test:
When RBCs containing HbS are mixed with a reducing substance such as sodium metabisulfite the decreased oxygen tension will cause the red cells to sickle.
1. Blood is placed on slide and sodium metabisulfite is added
Procedure of test:
2. A coverslip is placed over blood and sealed
3. Blood is examined for presence of sickle cells
