Reed-Sternberg & Variants
Reed-Sternberg cell:
Thick walled, binucleated, with large eosinophilic nucleoli giving it an “owl eyes” appearance
Seen in highest numbers in mixed cellularity subtype
Mononuclear variant of RS cell
Large, multilobated nuclei with inconspicuous nucleoli
Hodgkin cell:
Lacunar cell:
Usually seen in nodular sclerosis subtype
Polylobated or Lymph/Histiocyte variant:
Large cells with polylobated nuclei (“popcorn cell”)
Usually seen in nodular lymphocyte predominance subtype
Pleomorphic or Anaplastic variant:
Large cells with angular, variable sized, hyperchromatic nuclei and scant cytoplasm
Seen in lymphocyte depletion subtype
