Platelet Adhesion
Endothelial cells damaged
Collagen-rich basement membrane exposed
Platelets drawn into damaged area by increased turbulence
If damage is in veins or venules:
Platelets can adhere directly to collage surface
If damage is in arteries or arterioles:
Von Willebrand factor binds platelet to collagen surface
Platelet plug lasts only for few hours
Endothelial cells next to damaged area divide and new daughter cells force platelets out.
Fibroblasts also stimulated to divide.
