Endothelial cells damaged
Collagen-rich basement membrane exposed
Platelets drawn into damaged area by increased turbulence
If damage is moderate to severe:
Platelets stick to each other
They expend their energy stores
Once aggregated platelets can not disaggregate
Platelets shed phospholipids and coagulation proteins
In order for aggregation to take place the following are required:
Their membrane integrity lost
Form an unstructured mass called “syncytium”
Von Willebrand factor & fibrinogen
