Vitamin K
Factors that require vitamin K for synthesis:
Factor VII
Factor IX
Factor X
Protein C
Required for the addition of a g-carbon to glutamic acid to form g-carboxyglutamic acid
The g-carboxyglutamic acid is necessary for attachment of Ca++ which in turn allows the factor to bind with phospholipids
Mode of action of vitamin K:
Protein S
Vitamin K antagonists:
In vitamin K deficiencies or coumadin therapy the factors synthesized lack g-carboxyglutamic acid and can’t participate in coagulation
