Two forms of Protein S:
Free: only form able to interact with protein C
Bound: protein S is bound to C4bBp and is unavailable to react with protein C
Protein C & Protein S deficiencies:
2 – 5 fold increased risk of recurrent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
Protein S deficiencies also implicated in:
Transient ischemic attacks
CVA - strokes
