When mother lacks a
platelet-specific antigen and the fetus inherited the antigen from the father.
The fetal antigen may pass into
mother’s circulation and her immune system may produce antibodies to the antigen.
These antibodies may then pass
across the placenta and begin attacking the platelets of the fetus.
Most common fetal antigens involved:
P1A1 – of GPIIb/IIIa complex
Baka – of GPIIb – seen in Asians
