Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia Purpura
Triad of symptoms:
Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia
Thrombocytopenia
Neurologic abnormalities
Incidence:
Uncommon but not rare
Frequency is on the increase
Twice as frequent in female as males
Peak age is 30 – 40 year olds
Associated with :
50% have had viral infection just days prior to onset
Mechanism:
Large vWF multimers from macrophages and endothelial cells cause platelets to be bound
