Incidence:
Highest in 6 months – 4 year olds
90% of cases due to:
Shigella dysenteriae
Toxins absorbed into blood stream attach to glomerular capillary endothelial cells which become damaged releasing vWF multimers which form thrombi
Causative agents:
Bloody stool diarrhea
Renal failure
Mechanism:
Thrombocytopenia
Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia
Escherichia coli (O157:H7)
