Guidelines for writing an Annotated Bibliography

Assignment Develop an annotated bibliography of 15 sources which you might use in your extended analysis (research) project. Each source you include on your bibliography must be one you have actually looked at and scanned or read.

Definition An annotated bibliography is a list of sources you have available with a brief summary of the major points included in each summary.

Purpose Conducting an extended research project requires--before anything else-- that you gather sources you may use in conducting your research. These sources may include anything that you intend to use, from individuals you plan to interview to books and magazines you want to read to web pages you may find useful. Before you can begin your research project you must know the basic information you will find in your sources. An annotated bibliography requires you to do an initial scan of your sources to determine what each of your sources is saying or doing.

Example Below is an example of an annotated bibliographic entry in APA style. Notice that I include the citation of the article, in this case the same article that you practiced taking notes on. Then I add a brief paragraph of perhaps 75 words in which I provide the author's main idea and supporting evidence.

Malugani, M. (October 2005). Good Bedside Manners Make a Difference. Retrieved October 2005 from (http://healthcare.monster.com/articles/bedside)

Malugani notes that as expectations of high - quality customer service grow, health-care employers are placing a greater emphasis on good bedside manners. Malugani observes that good bedside manners help health-care provides develop stronger relationships with their patients, but more importantly, they help not only improve interactions with patients, but also advance health professionals' careers. Evidence suggests those who have strong relationships with their patients are less likely to get sued, and may be more likely to move up the professional ranks.

Directions

  1. Locate 15 potential sources related to your topic. These must be sources you can actually look at during this week. Sources which you order through inter-library loan are not acceptable for this assignment unless they arrive in time for you to read them and write a citation.

  2. Write a citation for each source in APA style. Your textbook will have guidelines for doing citations for most every source you will find. Ask me about any odd sources you can't find in the examples.

  3. Scan each source to gain a sense of the author's main and supporting points.

  4. Write a paragraph of 75-100 words summarizing the article's main ideas. Do not simply copy and paste the summary or abstract you may find in the electronic card catalogue. Remember, the purpose of this assignment is for you to spend time learning what is in your sources. You can do this best by reading them.

  5. Submit your annotated bibliography (with the AU cover page) to me at class time on Monday, October 31.
