Creating A Business Card
Due: Beginning of class, Thursday, January 11

Task

Considering your present major, minor, or other significant field of interest, imagine where you expect to be 20 years from now. Predict what sort of company or corporation you might be working for, what sort of work you will be doing for this company or corporation, and what your position in this company or corporation might be. Design the business card you will distribute to other individuals at professional meetings, dinner engagements, or other occasions where you may interact with your peers.

Rationale

ENGL306:Writing Seminar is an inter-disciplinary approach to writing research papers. While working on your own research project, you will become familiar with the research efforts of other members of the class and this knowledge will often prove to be mutually informative and helpful. The thinking you will do for this activity will encourage you to begin considering the research potentials of your major, minor, or other significant area of interest. As you exchange "business cards" with other members of the class, you will begin to discover the range of research possibilities in the class, notice where interests overlap, and begin to experience the rich experience of conducting research and learning new information.

Directions

When creating your business cards, follow these simple instructions:

  1. Imagine yourself in the work force twenty years from now. Who are you working for? What are you doing? What are some of the projects you've been involved in? What current research and development are you engaged in? Create a business card for the company or corporation you work for. Use your imagination! Be creative! But be serious!

  2. Your company or corporation should be related in some way to your present major or field of interest.

  3. Your business card should include your name, your title (president, chief executive office, accountant).

  4. Be sure that you include your current email address and telephone number on your business card.

  5. Your company or corporation logo is optional but include it if you want.

  6. Make enough copies (27) of your card for everyone in the class.

If you have questions about this assignment or about the class in general, please email me at closserb@andrews.edu. Most business cards have a distinctly serious
look.

Other business cards can be very fanciful.
