After the capture of Louisbourg by Wolfe in 1758, he had returned to Bath to restore his failing health. It is at this time that he renewed his relationship with Miss Catherine Lowther. He offered his hand in marriage and she accepted. She gave him her portrait which he wore until the eve of his death.

No mention is made of a ring that Wolfe would have given to his love. He did, however wear a miniature (a locket, perhaps) of Miss Lowther at all times and his wish, the night before the battle was that it be returned to her, set in diamonds. He removed the portrait on the eve of the Battle of Quebec and left it with John Jervis with instructions to return it to Miss Lowther. Jervis promised to carry out this task if necessary.

This portrait of Katherine Lowther given by Wolfe to John Jervis on the night of September 12, 1759 was delivered to her and she wore it in memory of James Wolfe until her marriage to the Duke of Bolton almost six years after the death of Wolfe.
