Wolfe had hoped to enjoy a few years of family life. He loved children
and his personal ambition was to take up residence with Miss Lowther and
watch their children grow up in a modest little cottage in a peaceful country
area. But this was not to be. Wolfe had given up his dreams for the service
of his country.
James Wolfe seemed to realize that he would be "undone forever" in the
battle at Quebec. His personal goals in life pushed aside, Wolfe requested
that the picture of Miss Lowther that he carried near his heart be returned
to her - "If I fall, let it be given to her with my best love" (Dent, p.
224).
