The 2003 H.M.S. Richards Lectureship on Biblical Preaching PRESENTS –
Dr. Hyveth Williams!
Dr. Williams is currently senior pastor of the Campus Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church in Loma Linda, California.
She is the first black female pastor and the first female Senior Pastor in the SDA denomination, and also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Religion on the Loma Linda University Faculty of Religion.
Since coming to Campus Hill Church in the fall of 1996, the Lord has blessed her congregation with much growth and weekly attendance (then 1,100, now almost 1,500). Under her leadership, her church was selected as a counseling site by Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend of the Cloud-Townsend Resource Center.
Prior to Campus Hill, Pastor Williams served as Senior Pastor of the Boston Temple Seventh-day Adventist Church, Massachusetts. An avid evangelist, Pastor Williams also served a four-year term as Associate Pastor for Evangelism at the Sligo Church in Maryland, after completing her pastoral internship at the Pennsylvania Avenue Church in Washington, D.C. and the All Nations Church in Berrien Springs, MI.
After a dramatic conversion, in
1978 Pastor Williams abandoned a successful political career and position
as Executive Assistant to the Mayor of Hartford, Connecticut, to be baptized
at Deptford SDA Church in London,
In 1989, she received her Master of Divinity degree from Andrews University Theological Seminary and in 1998 her Doctor of Ministry degree from Boston University School of Theology. By God’s providence, in 1996, Pastor Williams received a Fellowship from the Episcopal College of Preachers, National Cathedral, Washington, D.C., and holds the distinction of being the first non-Episcopalian to receive this prestigious award.
An internationally acclaimed preacher
and prolific writer, Dr. Williams, a native Jamaican who was raised in London,
Pastor Williams is a recipient of several leadership awards including the North American Division Distinguished Service Award for Pastoral Ministry and the Woman of the Year Award for Pastor/Chaplain from the North American Division Human Relations Department and the Association of Adventist Women.
Dr. Williams appreciates every opportunity to share the Gospel, approaching her role as a spokesperson for God as a sacred trust. She comes well prepared to share her love for preaching as this year’s featured presenter.
