Hints for Managing Disruptive Behavior

  1. Never treat a group member with disrespect, impatience, frustration or anger.
  2. Refer to ground rules when applicable.  Revisit ground rules at beginning of meeting.
  3. Get the group to comment on the disruptive behavior, when possible.
  4. A continually disruptive member may need more to do.  Find ways to put them to work, like recording.  Consider asking them to scribe.
  5. Use the "Parking Lot" when an impasse is reached.
  6. Protect group members from attack or interruption, encouraging them to protect themselves and each other.
  7. In conflicts, emphasize points of agreement, asking members with different views to highlight the real issues.
  8. Encourage disruptive individuals to self correct by subtle use of humor.
  9. Help individuals move on by validating their contributions.
  10. Always offer face-saving opportunities following a disruption.
