Major Samuel Ringgold was General Zack Taylor's right hand man during the
Mexican War. Ringgold's battery, the Third and Fourth Infantry, greatly
helped in breaking down the Mexican line. He had a tragic outcome
though. Of all the US officers killed, the one that stands out the most
would be Ringgold. He had done as much as anyone to bring the field
artillery arm to the degree of proficiency that it was at. After all
this, Ringgold was claimed to be the founder of "flying artillery."
Enemy sources say, "The artillery of the Americans, much superior to
ours, made horrid ravages in the ranks of the Mexican Army." Today, the
"flying artillery" would be known as the canon. (Bauer, 1974)
