Pinto is the Spanish word for painted. In this case the word refers to a spotted horse. Pintos have also been called paints, pied, and piebald in an effort to describe their black and white slashed markings. Pinto is a coloring, not a breed. For instance, a quarter horse (breed) is also a pinto (coloring) if it has the black and white spots.
