Communication In The Classroom

Thoughts and Questions from Courtney W. Moffatt and Thomas L. Moffatt in their book   Handbook for the Beginning Teacher. 

Read the following samples from Moffatt and Moffat and reflect on how you may do these things in your own classroom:

Classroom Communication Rules

  1. Respect everyone in the class and be a good listener.

  2. Only one person in a group talks at a time.

  3. Look at the person who is speaking and watch the speaker's body language to better understand the speaker's meaning.

  4. When students tell you personal information about themselves or their family, this information is not to be shared with anyone else.

  5. Treat others the way you would like to be treated

Other Ideas for Enhancing Classroom Communication

  1. Body-Positioning Exercises (Geared to determine one's personal space)

  2. Teach students the basic principles of Robert's Rules of Order

  3. Activities geared to identify positive examples of role models

  4. Develop Teacher consultation teams

  5. Send an "Information about my Child" sheet home to parents

  6. Send assignment sheets/books home to parents

  7. Improve cross-cultural communication

Reflect on the following questions and share them with your colleagues on the discussion page:

  1. Give a short example of how you could control a situation that might escalate.
  2. What are your keys to effective two-way communication in the classroom environment?
  3. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your communication skills?  Why?  What is good?  What          needs to be improved?
  4. What steps could be taken to improve your communication skills?
  5. What is one good way to get to know your students' parents?   What are some ways you can get to know your fellow teachers?
