If you want to stay in touch with research on this family, let me know. I'm considering Blogging, Surname lists such as Budd, and Russell, and purchasing a family web site on Rootsweb. Do you prefer Email, web site or both?
Saugus Iron Works, Saugus, MA. - Tormut Rose, from Scotland, was probably indentured here for 7 years. He probably cut wood for charcoal at the Saugus Iron Works, although we've no proof of this. He eventually went to Block Island and settled. In May 1998, my brother and sisters and I visited this beautiful park with restored waterwheels and forge and enjoyed their free tours.
New Haven, CT - John & Katherine Budd's first home in America. John Budd was the first Budd to come to the US from Middlesex England on the Hector around 1637. They landed in Boston harbor, settled in New Haven, CT, near the intersection of Church and Chapel streets.
Southold, Long Island- John & Katherine Budd home and small group of other period houses. Tours during the summer - call for schedule. They were escaping persecution in England, and being Episcopalian around puritans probably explains why they shortly left New Haven and started Southold. Restored in 1940, theirs is the oldest house of English design in America. Southold, Long Island (select "Attractions", then "Museums", and "Cutchogue Village Green and Old Burial Ground".) Rye, NY was the next home for the Budd family. There are many Budds still in this city and surrounding areas. The school, cemetery and library would be good places to visit. The town is nice with period homes and tours.
Terry Township, Bradford Co, PA was the home of Benjamin Budd after he moved from New York. The Hortons were related through marriage. Here are some links supplied from Anne Winters: Terry Township History, Mary, wife of John Budd was buried in Morgan Cemetery in Austinville, Bradford County PA, Baptist Hill Cemetery where Budds are buried, Revolutionary War Soldiers of Bradford County PA, Terry Township History - an account of the smallpox epidemic.
Wilkes Barre, Wyoming Co, PA - Although Chester Budd didn't know at the time, he was teaching school in the town where his forbears lived and fought in the Revolutionary War. John Budd filed an affadavit (after moving to Ohio) in court of his involvement when he filed for his pension. I haven't been there myself, but expect some historic information is in town pertaining to the forts and old historic sites.
Harlem, near Columbus, OH - John Budd of Revolutionary War era moved here. The town of Harlem was called Buddville. See several gravesites with numerous family members. Historic Society is open in summer and has many old documents. Ohio Historical and Genealogical Society Home Page and Local History and Genealogy Pages
Salem, Salem Co, NJ - although nothing of John A Peterson, Sarah M Elliott, or William, Abraham, or Cornelius Rose, or Benjamin Burroughs and Mary Van Horn vintage still stands, this old town is nice to visit. Check in at the Bed & Breakfast, and browse in the library or local history society for old family members. Courthouse and library records pertaining to Rose and Peterson are here. Nearby Cumberland Co, NJ may also hold some of our heritage.
Liberty, Union Co, IN has many Rose, Starbuck, and Peterson ties. It is a nice place to visit with many historic sites. The courthouse and library contain many records of our ancestors.
Lebanon, Boone Co, IN, Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co, IN, Jefferson Co, IN and Jennings Co, IN have many family members and historic sites relating to more recent family members. Here are the current Journal Review Obits.
From my mother's side New Albany, Floyd Co, IN. be sure to visit Koetter's Forest Discovery Center if you go near Borden, Indiana and the old Farnsley/Barker farm. Clark Co, IN. Clark Co, Public Library.
Let's start a list of nice vacation spots relating to our family. Perhaps they will lead us closer to other family members.
