NELSON DENNY READING

This test gives Andrews Academy a quick first look at the reading skills and levels of the incoming 9th graders to help with early identification of specific needs.
 

IOWA TEST OF EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (ITED)
Grades 9 & 11 | Required | $0 | No Prior Study Needed
Location: AA classrooms, as assigned
Scheduled: Third week of September, usually done during senior class trip

As part of the Cognitive Genesis Study being done by the General Conference, all 9th &11th graders in Adventist schools in the North American Division take this test. Beyond that, it gives helpful information to the school about the overall class as well as specific students.
 

DIFFERENTIAL APTITUDE TEST (DAT)
Grade 10 | Required | $0 | No Prior Study Needed
Location: AA classrooms, as assigned
Scheduled: Third week of September, usually done during senior class trip

The DAT: an aptitude and career interest test scoring on eight areas such as mechanical, verbal and math reasoning skills. It seeks to identify aptitude strengths and relate those to careers—making it a great springboard for career exploration.
 

STRONG INTEREST INVENTORY (SII)

Location: AA classrooms, as assigned
Scheduled: The last week of January

The SII empowers students to discover their true interests so they can better identify, understand and often expand their career options. The SII generates an in-depth assessment of interests among a broad range of occupations, work and leisure activities, and educational subjects.
 

PRELIMINARY SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE TEST (PSAT)
Grades 9, 10 & 11 | Strongly Encouraged | $13

Location: AA classrooms, as assigned. Please bring approved calculators and #2 pencils.
Scheduled: Anyone who wants to take this test MUST SIGN UP by SEPT. 15 with the AA Guidance Counselor. Test will be on WEDNESDAY, OCT. 15, beginning at 7:45 a.m.

The PSAT is a great way to practice for the SAT...and it is also cheaper. Grades 9 & 10 can take it for practice, too. Additionally, the PSAT is required to enter the National Merit Scholarship program which is eligible to juniors. Only the junior year test counts towards this program which can lead to significant monies for college based on scores.
 

MICHIGAN MERIT EXAM (MME)

Scheduled: 2nd week of March

The MME assesses juniors (and eligible seniors) based on Michigan high school standards. It consists of three components: ACT Plus Writing, Workkeys job skills assessment and Michigan developed assessments in math, science and social studies. The Michigan Promise scholarship provides up to $4,000 for successfully completing two years of college if all eligibility requirements are met. Michigan has discontinued the Michigan Promise scholarship due to lack of funds, so we do not participate in MME testing.Taking the ACT is one of the best ways to prepare for the MME.
 

ACT®

The ACT® test assesses high school students’ general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work. The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading and science. The Writing Test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. The ACT is excellent practice for the MME which all 11th graders must take. Therefore, all freshmen are encouraged to take it at least once prior to the MME in March of their junior year.
 

SAT

Scheduled: Offered in October, November, December, January, March, May and June on Sundays. Student is responsible to complete and mail the registration form by deadlines. A non-Saturday letter is required; stop by the AA Guidance Office to get a copy and registration form. Online registration is allowed only if you have previously taken the SAT.

Along with the ACT, the SAT Reasoning Test is one of the most widely-used admissions test for colleges. It tests students’ knowledge of subjects that are necessary for college success: reading, writing and mathematics. The SAT assesses the critical thinking skills students need for academic success in college—skills that students learn in high school.
 

AU MATH PLACEMENT
Grade 12 | Required

The AU Math Placement is calculated from the ACT math section result. Students need to take the ACT and submit the scores to Andrews University. See ACT above.

If necessary students can go the Andrews University Math Department and schedule a time to take an alternative test.
