Family : Interests : Goals

Flying:

I enjoy flying! Dad, the retired aircraft mechanic, and I refurbished this Vintage 1948 Cessna 140. The wings and tail feathers were off and the plane had been ground-looped and flipped on its back. Barnyard birds had created nests in the fuselage and it had been stored outside beside a barn for about 12 years before we found it and I purchased it. Needless to say, we had some work to do! We must have done a good job, because I flew it solo cross country from California to the Andrews University Airpark shortly after Jerri and I moved here, and it performed well all the way.

If you are not a pilot, you may not realize this, but every time you take off, you have a horizon-broadening experience. You not only see the trees (small picture) but the forest (big picture). You have a mini “God view” of the earth. The big issues of the work place and life are seen in proper perspective when you are able to “take off” and broaden your horizon. I guess that is an important consideration for leader/administrators, from time to time, in just about any context.

Water activities:

Our family has always enjoyed water sports. So on the occasion of my most recent birthday, (I’m no longer counting years)

with the family all here for the celebration, we launched the “The Office” (our family boat) into lake Michigan, secured the canopy, and took off for a great afternoon. Perhaps, if you would like, we could invite you to “The Office” for a visit. It is almost as good as a “Dune truck” for building relationships.

Music:

I enjoy music-not just listening to it but performing it. Playing trombone continues to be a great creative and social experience. Once upon a time, when the earth was cooling, I played first chair in the PUC Symphonic Orchestra.

Singing bass in choirs, male choruses, and mixed and male quartets continues to provide additional opportunities upon which to build friendships and through which I have a good time. I’ve participated in the creation of several CDs.
