The Mat

There are three main types of wrestling practiced in the world today. The type of wrestling known by most, practiced by collegiate and highschool atheletes is called Folkstyle. The most ancient type of wrestling, the type spoken about in ancient texts such as the bible is called Greco Roman wrestling. A third type of wrestling, freestyle, is the, "anything goes" of wrestling. Although, not everything goes, it allows the slams of greco roman, and the shots and leg action of folkstyle. It also has additional rules that make it one of the most complicated forms of wrestling.

The video below is a greco roman highlight video, watch it see if you notice any of the differences I mentioned in the paragraph above.

Once again, here is a freestyle video, you'll notice that in this video the wrestlers are grabbing and locking hands on their opponents legs, which is not allowed in Greco Roman. Freestyle does allow the throws of Greco Roman though. Many people find this to be the most interesting type of wrestling to watch because it involves so many move variants.

The final type of wrestling I'd like to go over, happens to also be the most popular type. Folkstyle wrestling, or collegiate wrestling, or scholastic wrestling, while it has different names depending on who you ask, it's the kind of wreslting that goes on at your local highschool. Colleges also practice this type of wrestling. This is by far the most strict type of wrestling, in my experience. I find this mainly due to the fact that it is practiced in highschools or colleges having safety as their main concern. This type of wrestling doesn't allow slams, while one could pick up his opponet, he must return him to the mat in a safe manner. This being said this type of wrestling doesn't really allow throws, which are the focal point of Greco Roman and sometimes Freestyle.
