Take the First Step!
It's been a long time since graduation. Textbooks are closed, exams are far from my mind, and I can barely remember the topic of that final presentation I did for... what was that class called again? Of course I do remember that my major was Journalism, but for some reason I'm working in Marketing... so what was the point of going to university?
Maybe you're at a point in your life where you're asking the same question. Or maybe you're still in school, or about to start, and you're asking yourself, so what am I going to do after graduation? The truth is, I can't answer that question for you, but I can tell you that for me, the answer was very simple. Education is a journey. Getting a degree in Communication was the very first step.
I am so glad that my first steps were in the Department of Communication at Andrews. After trying a little bit of everything and changing my major at least three times, I finally found a course of study that taught me how to do the things I already loved to do, only more effectively. When my friends were cramming formulas and dates, I was shooting video, taking pictures, applying practical theories, and working with teams.
After leaving the department, I managed to take a few more steps, thanks to the practical experience that I already gained while I was in school. I landed a full time job before graduation at WAUS, 90.7FM. Who would have thought that getting my feet wet volunteering to do data entry at the station would eventually lead to a full time salary with benefits as Marketing Director and Morning Show Host?
According to the Economic Policy Institute's Economic Snapshot for May 24, 2006, "It has been 20 years since young college graduates have experienced employment rates as low as those experienced in the last five years." The fact is, you may not get your dream job right after graduation. The beauty of being a Communication major is that you will posses the skills you need to actually create your own opportunities. For example, I've always wanted to get serious about making music, but I was constantly making excuses for myself because of my life circumstances (no money, no time etc.) To make a long story short, I woke up one morning and realized that life was passing me by. I already had all the skills I really needed to get started, so I just started! Visit www.rochellehanson.com, and you'll see what I mean.
The bottom line here is that you have to decide to make a move if you want to get somewhere. The Department of Communication at Andrews taught me how to do that, and they can teach you too. But you have to do your part and seize every opportunity. Talk to people you don't know. Make connections. Ask questions. Don't forget to smile. The clock is ticking and it's time to get yourself out there. So go ahead, you can do it! Take the first step!
