FROM THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR
Robson Marinho, PhD
A few days ago I was reading the story and achievements of General Norman Schwarzkopf, Commander of U.S. Central Command during the Gulf War of 1991. He was considered by ABC-TV's news magazine show as an American Hero who “became famous for planning a strategic military strike that almost immediately crippled Iraqi forces.” As I read the story, I was impressed with an interview he gave to a TV show that was celebrating his leadership. One of the questions was:"How would you like to be remembered in the future?"
The answer was simple:"That I loved my troops. That my troops loved me."
What a superior view of leadership! In fact, this was the secret of Schwarzkopf’s leadership. The general is quoted as saying that his first priority in the war was protecting the well-being of his troops: "I have loved soldiers since my first platoon, the first I ever commanded."
Love doesn’t seem to be a very common word in the corporate environment nor in many other leadership settings. However, as Kouzes and Posner say, “The best-kept secret of successful leaders is love: staying in love with leading, with the people who do the work, with what their organizations produce, and with those who honor the organization by using its products and services” (The Leadership Challenge, 351). Maybe it is time for us to review our concepts of leadership. It is time to embrace a new leadership paradigm!

Florida Writing Retreat
A group of Leadership participants from around the country met in Palm Coast, Florida for a four-day writing retreat in late January. The group, made up of members of LEADWest Leadership and Learning Group (LLG) included Anthony Stahl, Lynda Daniel-Underwood, Yami Bazan, Eddy Witzel and Robert Young. LEAD faculty member and specialist writing instructor Becky De Oliveira joined the group to offer feedback, tips and motivation. "I was really impressed with the focus of this group," De Oliveira says. "They had clear plans for what they hoped to accomplish during the retreat time - a factor I consider crucial to a retreat - and they made great strides in actually finishing those goals. The chance to get away from all the busyness and routine of ordinary life is really a gift. I'm pleased that this group used it so wisely and well."
Anthony Stahl, who lives in Florida, arranged accommodation for the group at a beautiful beach house in a private community just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, giving opportunities for participants to take occasional breaks to walk on the beach! In addition to hours each day spent in relative isolation, reading and writing, the group also enjoyed a potluck barbecue together and most attended a local worship service on Saturday morning.
The department hopes to run another retreat in April this year at The Hermitage in Michigan. Please see the following announcement for details and plan to attend if you can afford the time away and are at a place in your work where dedicated time to make significant progress would be useful and sensible.

Interested in an April 2012 Writing Retreat?
The department is tentatively planning a four-five day writing retreat at The Hermitage (Three Rivers, MI) at some time during the month of April. Please contact Becky De Oliveira (becky@andrews.edu) if you are interested in attending and indicate dates that might work best for you - or perhaps more importantly, dates that would not work! We hope to get a large enough group (nine or ten participants) to justify renting the facility. The cost for a retreat is just $250 per participant and includes accommodation, meals and faculty feedback/coaching as needed. The Hermitage facility is unique and provides a great environment for focus, solitude and study.

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM NEWS
MA Program in Brazil Graduates First Cohort
After two years of intensive summer and winter sessions, the first cohort of the Brazil MA Leadership Program graduated 42 participants on January 18, 2012. Besides the commencement ceremony to be held in May on the campus of Andrews University, the participants organized a local graduation ceremony on the campus of Brazil Adventist University, where family and friends were invited to join the celebration of their degree completion. Erich Baumgartner was the faculty speaker at the ceremony, and the participants enjoyed the occasion by singing together in an improvised choir of graduates. According to the graduate Gilberto Damasceno, President of the Northeast Brazil University, “This 2-year program has already changed my entire leadership and management style!”

MA Program in Brazil Starts Second Cohort
The second cohort of the MA Leadership Program in Brazil started on January 16, 2012, with 52 participants, most of which are administrators of different church organizations and institutions all over the country. The program has a similar structure as the Andrews Leadership program, being both job embedded and competency-based, with the requirement of a portfolio completion to document competency development. The January session included a Roundtable event, at which the keynote speaker was Stan Patterson, a 2007 graduate of the Andrews PhD Leadership program, who presented the theme of Spiritual Leadership. “I heard different news about this master’s program, but was surprised with the interactive methodology that breaks our traditional views of leadership,” said Caroline Lisboa, Registered Nurse and Manager of a healthcare program unit in São Paulo city.

Meet the New Educational Leadership (K-12) Team
Congratulations go to the K12 educational leadership team for securing National Recognition, with conditions, for their k12 educational administration principal (MA) programs. As Duane Covrig explains, “The Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) gives National Recognition to programs that go through a rigorous process of showing how their graduates fulfill seven national standards—visionary leadership, instructional programming, management and administration, public and community relations, ethics, social and legal ability, and successful mentoring and interning.”
Duane Covrig comments, “This is a huge step forward for our program and students. This opens the door for our participants to secure credentialing in many other states. I am so thankful that God has been with us on this journey. While we still need to meet some conditions and do a better task of helping candidates fulfill all ELCC requirements, this is a wonderful milestone in our program.”
Sylvia Gonzalez notes: “The ELCC national accreditation of our EDAL program is something that we have dreamed of achieving and to that effect we worked very hard to meet all the necessary criteria.
As the new Program Coordinator, Janet Ledesma says: “I believe that all of the hard work and dedication of our team to complete the application process and to acquire ELCC Recognition will pay huge dividends as we continue to build our program exemplified in educational excellence.
Webinars for Principals Attract School Leaders
In an attempt to educate and enhance the professional skills of school principals in an interactive manner, the Educational Leadership team launched the first series of webinars on January 9, 2012. The first presenter was Garry Sudds, Lake Union Director of Education, on the topic of Spiritual Leadership tips For Principals, which was attended by 66 school administrators.
The second webinar was presented by Larry Blackmer, North America Division Vice President, addressing the topic of resources available for school administrators. At that session, 60 school administrators attended. As one principal shared, “this was the best session I have ever attended because of all of the free resources that were shared for me to use at my school.”
On February 6, 2012, Debbie Baker, President of Heritage Academy, presented another webinar on team building for school leaders, and there were 22 principals in attendance. One of the principals wrote at the end of the session: “Thank you for introducing us to ideas we can carry into our real life setting on a daily basis”.
As the new Program Coordinator, Janet Ledesma shares her excitement: “The most fascinating aspect for me has been the fact that at 4:30 pm EST principals from across the country stop what they are doing and engage in these online discussions. I believe in a small way we are affirming their role and equipping them with some of the tools they need to support them on their administrative journeys.” According to her, principals who are unable to attend can access the webinar by logging into the session at a later time that is more convenient for them.

IGHER EDUCATION PROGRAM NEWS
Zachary Mngo Accepts New Position
Following his graduation from the PhD program in Higher Education in August 2011, Zachary Mngo has recently accepted a position as Dean of the School of Education at Cosendai Adventist University, in Cameroon. Zachary says, “My present duties in Cosendai consist of reassessing, reshaping, and updating programs within the context of the European model of higher education recently adopted in Cameroon and the rest of the Central African sub-region. I am also analyzing the faculty pool of the School and taking important notes on what needs to be done to make the School of Education one of the attractions of our budding university. The fact that we have a department of Educational Psychology but have no single permanent faculty in this area stands out in my mind as the most urgent need of the school that has to be addressed right away. Considering that we are an undergraduate institution, faculty with an MA in Educational Psychology will be enough for us at this time. I am now involved in a campaign for funds ($5000.00) that will sponsor someone for a two-year MA program in Educational & Developmental Psychology in the University of Buea, one of our local universities offering the program, so donations are welcome.”
