Fifty years ago the Civil Rights Act was signed by President Lyndon Johnson, with Martin Luther King Jr. in attendance. This landmark piece of civil rights legislation in the United States outlawed major forms of discrimination against racial, ethnic, national and religious minorities, and women. It ended unequal application of voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools, at the workplace and by facilities that served the general public. King's role in the American civil rights movement helped bring about this legislation, and called the act nothing less than a “second emancipation.” We pause to celebrate this legacy of freedom, and discuss the yet unfulfilled needs of equality and freedom.
