We welcome you to take part in an exciting math experience at Andrews University. Designed specifically for talented high school students with an interest in math, the Mathematics at Andrews for Talented High Schoolers (M.A.T.H.S.) camp is a great way to compliment your high school college prep curriculum. Mathematically curious high school students will explore some of the most exciting mathematical findings from the last century and a half. Instead of covering topics from the traditional high school curriculum, students will be exposed to more advanced mathematical ideas and learn how to think like a mathematician.
Students will spend mornings in an interactive class where they will be introduced to the ideas they’ll use in the afternoons as they work with their peers to discover and appreciate these beautiful theorems for themselves. They will also have the opportunity to select a topic to research and present on it.
Topics covered will come from graph theory and topology, including an introduction to the mathematical study of knots. Students who have demonstrated an excellent aptitude for mathematics and are interested in participating in such a community where they will make lifelong like-minded friends are encouraged to apply.
We are pleased to have Anthony Bosman join us to lead out in your math experience. After attending Forest Lake Academy, Anthony studied mathematics at Stanford University where he graduated with honors. He also studied at Oxford University and is now completing his doctorate in mathematics researching Knot Theory at Rice University. He has several years of teaching experience, has led math programs for talented high school students at Stanford and Rice, and has been recognized for his engaging teaching style.
Students who are interested in participating in the Mathematical Excursion can apply by filling out the Early College Experience application. In addition to the admission requirements for the early college program, students should show additional aptitude in the area of mathematics. Student should be able to show their ability through a high school curriculum that will include Algebra II and Pre-Calculus, submit Standardized test scores in the 75 percentile in math, a letter of recommendation from a math instructor, and the application supplement found below.
The Mathematical Excursion is designed as a summer camp program for students with high math abilities. The course and seminars offered will not grant college credit.
This supplement will help assess your skills in various mathematical areas. Please print the form and complete as many problems as you can. You must show your work. When finished this form should be submitted with your completed Early College application.
