Southern Adventist University Student Missionary Murdered in YAP
Early yesterday morning, a student missionary from Southern Adventist University, Kirsten Elisabeth Wolcott, went missing after a jog. According to Yap Principal Nicholas Fonseka of the Guam-Micronesia Mission, Kirsten was later found murdered. Additional details will be shared as available. Please keep the family of Kirsten in your prayers during this time of tragic loss. Two current Andrews University student missionaries are also serving in YAP. Keep their safety in your prayers as well. Southern has also established a message board for condolences.
This statement came from the North America Division regarding Kirsten's death:
It's been a long night for me. Please be aware everyone that this tragedy involving Kirsten Wolcott is receiving the highest priority at all levels of the denomination.
The full administration of GMM flew to Yap last night to personally work with authorities and process the grief with the school family.
The local division, our NAD office and the GC AVS office also are following up with any services as needed or requested.
Do not fear for the safety of our missionaries there on Yap. One of the mysteries of homicide is the deep uncertainty for everyone's safety. A number of us are well acquainted with Yapese culture and know that this is more likely to be a horrible isolated crime.
Our denomination's highest level leaders in that mission are there with our missionaries right now. I assure everyone that everything is being done with care and attention to key issues at moments like this.
May God bless the Wolcott family and touch their broken hearts. I ask each of us to pray for them and to provide our best ministerial support to our students in stemming the urge to panic. May God grant us all His peace.

Autobiography: Dr. Leona Running
Dr. Leona Running, the first woman to hold a regular teaching position in the SDA
Theological Seminary, and who taught there for 46 years, now has written her autobiography. A secretary and linguist who worked her way through a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University partly by typing dissertations, now age 93, Dr. Running composed this manuscript on her trusty portable manual typewriter, despite recovering from a broken wrist. The book covers her early years in Michigan, later college graduation from EMC (now AU), academy language teaching in the West, her marriage and early widowhood, and her work at the Voice of Prophecy in California and then the GC Ministerial Association in Takoma Park, MD, where she helped produce Ministry magazine. Seminary teaching followed, intermingled with work for her former major professor, Dr. William Foxwell Albright, whose biography she later coauthored with renowned Dr. David Noel Freedman. During her seminary years there were also numerous trips to Europe and the Middle East. And there were the issues of salary inequities for women, and ordination for them, both of which are part of her story but not recounted with rancor. The General Conference Ministerial Association has published the book, and it can be ordered for $10 (including postage) from:
