Global Mission Leadership

2011 Adventist University of Africa Cohort

The concentration in Global Mission Leadership is culturally contextualized and is taught in sponsoring field locations outside the North American Division. Effective starting 2015, the Global Mission Leadership concentration is no longer available.

Mission

The mission statement of the Seminary reads:

The Seventh-day-Adventist Theological Seminary is one of the most culturally diverse seminaries in North America. Approximately 40% of on-campus enrollment are international students. The SDA Theological Seminary faculty also reflects an international flavor. In response to the needs expressed by leaders in the international headquarters of the SDA denomination, the Doctor of Ministry program determines to be a global program preparing participants for global service. Participants from outside the United States often join cohorts within the United States, and the program is experienced in providing international cohort sites as well. Further, by teaching at an extension site, we increase the number of those who will become active in leadership within their home countries.

Learning Modalities

The learning modalities to be included in the concentration’s pedagogy are:

• Classroom lectures interspersed with didactic and experiential learning
• Networking with experienced practitioners and experts in the field of mission  leadership, as well as colleagues and peers who are cohort members
• Viewing of videos, power point presentations, and listening to audio visual performances
• Participating and leading out in breakout groups and interactive exercises
• Forming support groups who collaborate in collective assignments, discussion and prayer groups
• Being mentored by faculty members and in turn mentor cohort colleagues
• Researching ministry and project issues through analyzing current literature, through participant observations, case studies, and field research
• Implementing dissertation project plans in the actual context of their ongoing ministry settings (based on theological reflections, field research, and an intervention involving a specific challenge in a ministry context)
• Monitoring (documenting) implementation activities and critically self-evaluating project implementations (for the purpose of making adjustments and identifying lessons learned)
• Regular communications (newsletter) between professors and students with updates, reminders, and feedbacks
• Establishing a ministry development plan (MDP) which will be used in monitoring and assessing ministerial growth throughout the program
• Context support groups to review each student’s MDP annually and provide assessment of progress.
