Rice and beans : 5 months, 49 students, and innumerable Honduran cows
El Suyatal is a rural, farming village in central Honduras, set slightly north of the country's capital, Tegucigalpa and nestled at the base of a 1000-meter mountain. Here, several thousand inhabitants wash their clothes by hand and live in a small colorful houses while working to raise corn and beans and coffee by hand and live in small, colorful houses while working to raise corn and beans and coffee for their support. Rice and Beans, a collection of eleven essays, grows out of five months of volunteer experience spent as an English teacher in El Suyatal from January to June 2010. This volume of creative non-fiction offers a portrait of village life and explores themes of language and culture, faith and friendship.
