Presenters

KATIA G REINERT, PhD, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, PHCNS-BC

Dr. Reinert is a family nurse practitioner with a PhD in Nursing from Johns Hopkins University focusing on health outcomes and religious involvement among adult survivors of childhood trauma. She serves as Health Ministries associate director for the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and also enjoys volunteering as a primary care clinician at Shepherds clinic in Baltimore, MD, serving vulnerable families and immigrants.

Dr Reinert has published scientific research articles, books, periodicals, and is a peer reviewer for professional journals. She has an interest in mental health and preventive medicine, and serves on the National Advisory Council for the Center for Mental Health Services at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency of the United States. Her passion is in helping people experience whole healthy lives, reaching their full potential in Christ in this life and for eternity. 

 

Gretchen Krivak MS, RD, CGFI

Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health, Nutrition and Wellness at Andrews University, in Berrien Springs, Michigan.  She has been a part of the Andrews faculty for over 7 years and provides the Public Health, Nutrition and Wellness Department with her expertise in both nutrition and fitness.  Gretchen graduated from Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana with her BA in Exercise Science.  She completed her Master of Science at Andrews University in Nutrition and Wellness and she is currently working on her Doctorate of Education in Sports Management with an emphasis in Sports Health & Fitness through the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama.  Gretchen is a Registered Dietitian and is part of the Dietetic Practice Group SCAN (Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition).  She has 4 years of experience teaching sports nutrition at Andrews and prior to that worked with athletes at the University of Notre Dame as a Dietetic Intern.  In her spare time Gretchen enjoys camping, spending time with her family and friends, lifting weights, traveling, and taking hikes in the great outdoors.   

 

Carol Burtnack, MS, RD

Carol Burtnack is an Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics at Andrews University. She graduated from Andrews University with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics. She received her Masters of Science in Nutrition and Wellness from Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. She has over 6 years of experience as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and worked as a Clinical Dietitian at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital prior to returning to Andrews University to teach in the fall of 2014. She has an interest in sports nutrition and eating disorders. She is also a certified personal trainer. In her spare time, Carol enjoys running, ice skating, and watching her favorite hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

 

Torben Bergland, MD

In 2016, Torben Bergland left his position as psychiatrist and director at the Depression department of a prestigious psychiatric hospital in Norway to work full-time for the church. He had long desired to contribute to the church through his competency within psychology and psychiatry, so when the call came to take on the responsibility as Health Ministries director in the Trans-European Division, it was an easy yes. He has a comprehensive perspective on health and believe that the mental, social and spiritual dimensions of life are just as important for good health and quality of life, as physical health. Having worked with patients in psychotherapy for years his special focus is on how we can develop and enjoy deep, authentic and satisfying relationships with others and with God.

 

Dominique Gummelt, PhD, CPT, CWP

Dominique is the Director for University Health and Wellness at Andrews University. She is also an international speaker, certified personal trainer (ACE), wellness practitioner (NWI), lecturer, author, filmmaker, hobby photographer and musician. She loves to travel, move, sing, play music, laugh and help other people live better, happier, healthier and more meaningful lives. In addition to teaching at private and public universities throughout the United States (2001 – present), she has worked as a fitness and programs manager, personal trainer, group fitness instructor and wellness coach at fitness centers, in the clinical wellness setting and in the cooperate wellness setting since 2001. She was awarded 'Top 11 Personal Trainers to Watch in the U.S.' (2011) by Life Fitness and the American Council on Exercise. In 2016, the U.S. President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition recognized Dominique with the 'Community Leadership Award' for health promotion. In 2017, she completed her PhD in Health through the University of Bath, UK. She is one of the first certified 'Exercise-is-Medicine Specialists' (Level 1) through the American College of Sports Medicine. In 2017 she made her successful debut as executive producer and producer of a wellness transformation short documentary, which has earned two 'Awards of Merit', 'Official Filmmaker Selection' and a '3rd place win' at various film festivals in the U.S. and Canada.

 

Maximino Mejia

Dr. M. Alfredo Mejia received a Dr.PH. at Loma Linda University in public health nutrition. Currently he teaches vegetarian nutrition and disease prevention and research methodology for the Department of Public Health, Nutrition and Wellness at Andrews University. During the last decade Dr. Mejia has focused his research on assessing the environmental impact of foods among populations with diverse dietary patterns.

 

Dr. Sherine Brown-Fraser

Dr. Sherine Brown-Fraser is a Nutrition Biochemist, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, with a PhD from Harvard University in Biological Sciences in Public Health with a concentration in nutrition biochemistry. Dr. Fraser is dedicated to advancing health promotion, disease prevention, and eliminating health disparities through lifestyle and plant-based vegetarian nutrition. She is currently Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health, Nutrition and Wellness at Andrews University. She provides vision and direction for the department while teaching both graduate and undergraduate students courses central to plant-based nutrition. Dr Fraser previously worked as an Interdisciplinary Scientist for the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, where she developed national science policies and enforcement strategies to promote the nation’s health. Dr Fraser’s scientific research expertise is in lipid metabolism, genetic epidemiology and cardiovascular disease. Her doctoral work investigated gene-diet interactions on human plasma lipoproteins and cholesterol metabolism related to heart disease risk. Her postdoctoral research at the Brigham and Woman’s Hospital (Boston), a Harvard affiliate, examined the impact of dietary plant proteins on hypertension in the OMNI-Heart Study. She has published research in the areas of cholesterol metabolism, public health nutrition, colon cancer, CBPR, obesity, agriculture, and food science. Dr. Fraser enjoys the outdoors, traveling, the arts, and spending time with family. Dr. Fraser is married to Handel Fraser, the proud parents of their active 2 year old daughter Samantha.

Sherri Isaak is the Dietetic Internship Director for the Department of Public Health, Nutrition & Wellness
