New Student Testing
As a new student you are required, in most instances, to take three tests as you enroll at Andrews University – one before you arrive, and two during Orientation Week.
BEFORE YOU ARRIVE:
First Year Testing. This testing consists of the Do What You Are – Personality Inventory (DWYA) and the PEPS Learning Style Inventory. These inventories will help you gain insight into your interests, abilities, and personality characteristics, and assist us in helping you achieve your academic and career goals. This testing is required of first year students, and optional for transfer students.
The testing is computerized and can be accessed from any computer with internet capability. Testing opens July 15, 2009 and closes August 15, 2009. Please make sure that you complete the testing during the open dates, as this will be one less thing to worry about when you come to campus. A $40 charge to cover testing material cost will be placed on your Andrews University account upon your completion of the tests, confirmation of attendance, and arrival on campus.*
To take the test, follow these simple steps:
- Go to: www.collegescope.com/andrews
- Register as a New Student:
- Begin the DWYA
- After you complete the DWYA go back and click on RETURN TO HOMEPAGE, then complete the PEPS-Learning Style Inventory.
Upon arrival to campus you will be scheduled to attend a mandatory 50-minute session to review your test results and discuss implications for your future.
ORIENTATION WEEK:
The Math Placement Exam (MPE). The purpose of the MPE is to maximize student success in beginning mathematics courses by placing the student in a course at an appropriate level. We do not want you to take a course that is too hard for you. It is a waste of money to repeat failed courses – or to take a course that you already have mastered. With a few exceptions, all undergraduate students must take the MPE to fulfill the General Education Mathematics requirement, or to register in any mathematics course.
Exceptions: the following students do NOT have to take the MPE:
-
Students who have, at the time of their first enrollment at Andrews University, transferred credit from an accredited college in a College Algebra, Precalculus, Precalculus Algebra, Trigonometry, or any Calculus course.
-
Students who have taken AP Calculus and have passed the AB test with a score of at least 3, or have passed the BC test with a score of at least 4.
-
Students transferring from a four-year college into Physical Therapy or Clinical Laboratory Science and are classified as Seniors in their first year at Andrews.
-
Students enrolled in the English Language Institute are not required to take the MPE until the first semester of enrollment in regular college level courses.
Courses named Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Mathematics, Beginning Algebra, will generally not be sufficient to meet the General Education requirement, although taking them can help you score well in the MPE.
Nelson-Denny Reading Test. This test is required of First Year students only and measures vocabulary, comprehension, and reading rate. Students with an ACT reading score of 24 or higher or an SAT verbal score of 540 or higher will not be required to take the Nelson-Denny. However, if you are planning to enter the Nursing Program you should take the test, as a certain level score is required to enter the program in your second year.
