eigen* outdoor enthusiasts backpacked the Manistee River Trail last fall (17-19 September 2004) -- approximately 11 miles along the east side of the Manistee River -- from the Red Bridge trailhead to the North Country Trail (NCT) crossover. It was a wonderful, leisurely hike with evenings hanging around the campfire batting around "deep thoughts". We could have included the west side of the river on the NCT, doubling our distance, but the group chose to take it a bit easier and go for quality rather than quantity. There are some requests for us to do the entire 20 mile loop this time, including the NCT portion on the other side of the river, since we have more time available if we go during the fall break - leaving the 7th of October and returning on or before the 11th. Classes resume on the 12th.
We'd love to have you get your gear together and join us for this year's hike. The destination and extent are group decisions, so your input counts. The Manistee River Trail was chosen last year because it was close and minimized driving time. Please register your interest by e-mail to eigenoff@andrews.edu. You don't have to be a member of eigen* to join us in our backpacking trip. Think of it as an outdoor club embedded in the math and physics club.
