2018 Updates

  • Support and integrate interdisciplinary learning opportunities between speech-language pathology and audiology students and other academic programs. The College of Health & Human Services established an Inter-professional Committee.  One faculty member from each school within the college serves as a member of the committee.  This committee assists in the development programs and events to support the Interprofessional growth and enrichment of our students.
  • Poverty Simulation - As such students in MS program in 2016 and 2017 engaged in a Poverty Simulation.  This Interprofessional experience exposed students to socioeconomic issues facing many individuals they will meet, treat and work with. It included several degree programs including Nursing Medical Laboratory Sciences, Public Health Nutrition and Wellness, and Educational and Counseling Psychology from the College of Health & Human Services.   
     
  • Vespers - Each semester the College of Health & Human Services offer a religious Vesper service.  Students are invited to attend, enjoy a meal and share about what service activities they have engaged in.
     
  • Human Simulation - The Interprofessional goals/objectives for this activity have been linked to the four core competencies developed by an expert panel and outlined in the Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice document. These goals/objectives are:
  1. Promote a climate of mutual respect and shared values to work with individuals of other health professions.
  2. Demonstrate patient and community-centered health care in an environment of teamwork and collaboration.
  3. Choose appropriate channels to communicate with patients, communities, families, and other health professionals considering the priority and content of the message.
  4. Support team work values to deliver safe, timely, efficient, and equitable health care.
  • Health Fair – The MS students participate in the annual university Health Fair.  During this fair various schools, departments and local health professionals offer various services and educational information.  The MS students offer speech, language and hearing screenings.
  • Expand service opportunities to the global community – The program has sought to provide various community based clinical experiences.  Recently, these have included participation in The Best Week Ever, Andrews University Change Day, and Benton Harbor Charter School Academy. Through these experiences students offered enrichment, clinical services, and career information and demonstrations.
     
  • Global Service Mission 2019 Plan – Research and development has begun on a global engagement program between the School of Communication Sciences & Disorders and 3 Special Needs institutions in Jamaica, WI.  The vision is to have the first mission/clinical trip in the summer 2019 where students, teacher, and local medical professionals will receiving training and intervention in speech and language disorders.  Based on information shared teachers and local professionals will be trained in the use of AAC devices for communication, lesson planning and teaching.
