Position summary
Helps coordinate and perform landscape and lawn maintenance; performs tree and shrub pruning, removal and care; helps coordinate annual planting schedule; works as landscape project lead for landscape renovations and new installations; conducts pesticide application; helps plan and lead student work crews; works to monitor and maintain athletic fields; removes leafs in fall; works on snow removal.

- Minimum of GED or high school diploma, degree in horticulture or related field preferred
- Possession of a Michigan Pesticide Applicators License preferred. 3A, 3B, and 6
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
- Responsible for the maintenance and general beautification of grounds including gardens, landscaped and, sports fields, and general cleanliness of parking lots, streets and hardscaped areas.
- Performs a variety of grounds maintenance work such as pruning, trimming,, bracing and spraying trees, and shrubs.
- Inspects campus for landscaping needs and recommends addition/removal of grass, native plants, or rocks.
- Mows grass and applies pesticides.
- Determines the need for the use of herbicides and pesticides.
- Helps prepare annual planting schedules.
- Trains personnel in herbicides and pesticides application.
- Reports broken or leaking sprinklers.
- Works as crew lead on seeding, planting and sodding in fields; weeding, cutting and raking lawns.
- Plows, brushes, sprays, and shovels snow.
- Operates a variety of grounds maintenance equipment and vehicles.
- Performs preventative maintenance on grounds maintenance equipment, and outdoor furniture.
- Ensures good housekeeping in shop and worksites.
- Must be available on an “On Call” basis.
- Overtime may be required.
- Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.
- Complies with all State and University policies.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Supervisory responsibilities
Ability to supervise groups of student workers in: landscape maintenance, tree maintenance and removal, pesticide application, new project construction and landscape renovation, and snow removal.
Qualifications
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Minimum Education required: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Degree in Horticulture preferred.
Licenses: Pesticide Applicator License preferred
Minimum Experience required: Three years of experience, related to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience. May be required to operate light or heavy equipment.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
An excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to read and work from architectural drawings
Ability to learn and use Campus software programs

Physical demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to feel; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and move up to 75 pounds. The employee is required to wear Personal Protective Equipment to include: Steel toe and Non-slippery shoes, eye protection, ear protection, respirator or dust mask, hard hats, sunglasses, gloves, face shield, and rubber boots.
Work environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind, snow, and ice).The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate, but can become loud when using grounds maintenance equipment. The employee will be expected to handle pesticides and treat them with proper caution.
