Position summary

Full-time tenure track position: Requires 24 teaching credits per year, including music classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels, fulfilling responsibilities of the orchestral studies area, preparing and conducting the concerts of the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra (AUSO).

Duties and responsibilities

The AUSO conductor duties include:

• Overseeing auditions, organizing, planning, and running rehearsals with the AUSO


• Conducting the AUSO concerts


• Coordinating all activities concerning promotion of concerts, programs, pre-concert talks, and livestreaming arrangements


• Monitoring and directing all activities concerning music materials for rehearsals and concerts such as music rental, hiring extra personnel, and stage set-up at the Howard Performing Arts Center


• Collaborating with soloists and colleagues


• Teaching classes in the areas of conducting and score study. Other teaching responsibilities could include orchestration, music theory, and individual instrumental classes as needed.


• Other instrumental conducting


• Actively engaging in community outreach


• Planning and coordinating all festivals and touring activities relating to the AUSO


• Hiring and supervising student workers and the AUSO graduate assistant

Supervisory responsibilities

Directly supervises student employees including office workers and graduate assistants. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable regulations. Responsibilities include but are not limited to planning, assigning, directing work, and appraising performance. 

Qualifications

• Exhibit consistency and experience in music performance


• Demonstrate excellent leadership and mentorship skills


• Maintain and build strong collegial relationships


• Earned doctoral degree in conducting is preferred

Technical competencies

Familiarity with classroom technology, use of Zoom (video conferencing), and the Course Learning Management System (Moodle/LearningHub).

The position necessarily includes interaction with many types of people including students, staff, faculty, and guest artists. Strong skills in collegiality, service, and communication are highly desirable in the qualified candidate.

• Stand, sit, talk and demonstrate at a level to be understood for two or more hours at one time as required for rehearsals and lecture sessions.


• Ambulate approximately 500 yards and negotiate 2 flights of stairs to get around campus as needed.


• Be able to perform physical tasks relevant to the teaching load.

Work environment

The work environment conditions for this job are similar to those found in any regular office and classroom environment. Occasional outdoor performances may be scheduled. The noise level in the work environment includes music from rehearsal rooms nearby, instruments playing, and vocalization.
