Position summary

Under guidance of the Camp Director, the On-Site Program Director plans and directs the daily program of the Andrews University Summer Camp, overseeing all activities and staff and ensures the health and safety of the campers. Works within the framework of the program, policies, standards and expectations of Andrews University and the State of Michigan. Must be energetic, creative, positive, and have the ability to work well with staff and campers alike. Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.  Will also co-direct a group of campers.  Be available to work June 5, 2023 - August 25, 2023.

Qualifications summary

• Must be 19 years of age or older.


• Experience in leadership roles.


• Ability to lead and oversee staff of all ages and levels of experience.


• Ability to work long hours, in an outdoor setting, requiring regular physical activity, standing for long periods.


• Ability to be highly punctual and to successfully allocate and manage time.

Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

• The Summer Camp On-Site Program Director will be trained in all aspects of their job.


• Keeps the camp program running on the schedule provided by the Director/Assistant Director.


• Assigns staff to coordinate or assist in activities and events on a daily basis. Instructs staff of their responsibilities for each event.


• Supervises all camp-wide activities and activity areas.


• Monitors weather conditions when planning outdoor activities.


• Accepts responsibility for maintenance and necessary housekeeping duties of the gym, common use areas and outside play area.


• Assists and coordinates snacks, meals, and bathroom activities.


• Maintains standards for health and safety of campers as related to all planned activities.


• Provides the children with verbal praises and acceptance while providing clear and consistent expectations for the children's behavior.


• Evaluates program activities on a weekly basis and makes adjustments as necessary.


• Maintains Andrews University Summer Camp's professional attitude and work behavior.


• Observes all rules and regulations of Andrews University Summer Camp and the local, state or national regulatory agencies pertaining to the health, safety and care of children.


• Assists with activities in opening and/or closing the camp.


• Any other duties as requested by the Camp Director/Assistant Director.

Supervisory responsibilities

Will suprvise Counselors and Counselors-in-Training.

Qualifications

• Ability to lead and oversee staff of all ages and levels of experience.


• Ability to work with children of all ages, understand their interests, and apply that to the development of the program.


• Ability to competently supervise the daily program activities of the camp throughout the summer.


• Ability to evaluate the camp program objectively, and make necessary decisions and changes.


• Ability to work long hours, in an outdoor setting, requiring regular physical activity, standing for long periods.


• Ability to be highly punctual and to successfully allocate and manage time.


• Must be 19 years of age or older.

Physical demands

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 3% walking, and 55% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.  

Work environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
