GENERAL COUNSEL - Legal Counsel

Position summary

This position provides legal counsel to the University on a wide array of fronts including but not limited to - corporate law, employment law, educational law, student affairs and academic issues.

Qualifications summary

A JD degree ABA accredited law school
Admission to the Michigan Bar or eligible for admission within one year of employment
5 years of active practice experience preferred
Experience in an educational institution preferred


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

Provides a broad spectrum of leadership and legal advice applicable to an educational setting, including work with grants, contracts, federal and state laws, academic related issues such as freedom within an academic environment, tenure, due process, campus safety, EEO, labor relations, Andrews University Policy, privacy rights under multiple statutes, research regs, interllectual property rights, etc.  Works closely with external Andrews University constituents and represents the University in legal proceeding.
This role is a key role in helping the institution reach its full potential relative to educational success as a research institution, a diversity leader and fostering a learning environment for students which is welcoming and nondiscriminatory.

Supervisory responsibilities

Supervises an Administrative Assistant
May supervise a law intern

Qualifications

A JD degree ABA accredited law school

In addition the individual must be able to interact in a postive collegial way with a variety of constituents internally, such as facutly, administrators, staff as well as externallly with lay constituents, church personnel and administrators, county, state and law enforcement officials.

Technical competencies

Must be computer literate and comfortable doing research on-line

Interpersonal interactions

Must be comfortable interacting with students, faculty, staff, and external personel in a variety of ways, including but not limited to legal representation, advisory, mentoring and consulting as a University Officer.

Physical demands

The demands of this job are primarily, intellectual and mental.  The physical demands are minimal.

Work environment

Works in an office environment with little or no noise.  will be expected to travel occaisionally and make presentations as appropriate.
