Comprehensives

You must be on regular status and officially advanced to degree candidacy at least 1 month before applying to take comprehensives. The Application for Comprehensive Examination form must be submitted at least 1 month before the scheduled date of comprehensives.  It must be approved by your Supervisory Committee. The content of the comprehensives is tailored to your interests and goals as expressed in your Statement of Purpose and operationalized in your Plan of Study.

Comprehensives are taken on the School of Education dates as published in the Academic Calendar.  Your special needs should be discussed with the Administrative Assistant who communicates these to the SED. The average examination is 6-8 hours written in 2-3 blocks of time.

You will receive official notice of results within 3 weeks of writing.  "Partial rewrite" means that on part of the examination, you need to rewrite a question. A "no pass" means that you will be able to repeat the entire examination but only once and not within a period of less than 10-weeks between the first and second examination.

Discussion about comprehensives is at the discretion of the Supervisory Committee who will guide and support you in this process.  It is to your advantage to have almost completed any non-thesis projects and/or thesis as it is in these that you synthesize your ideas and integrate your areas of study.
