The Student Experience

“I participated in a 12-week, summer internship with Loma Linda University Medical Center. I interned with the Department of Staff Development. I learned to use programs like Adobe Captivate and Camtasia to produce educational material that was posted on LLUMC's website. My supervisor brought me to meetings where I got a behind-the-scenes look at what administration must do to run a teaching hospital. This internship is an excellent opportunity for any communication student because they place you in a department that aligns with your interests and career goals. They also provide mentoring opportunities with CEOs and CFOs. To get an internship is the perfect start to a career."

"My internship at Focus on the Family was an experience of a lifetime!  I gained tremendous experience working in their television and webcast production department and was immediately treated like one of their own.  They always involved me in their meetings, pre-production tasks, and technical elements of the show.  I especially appreciated that my supervisor was always willing to answer questions and made sure I understood each assignment.  Communication between my co-workers was great and the environment was light-hearted and full of laughter.  If the opportunity arose, I would definitely consider working there after graduating."

"With an Interdisciplinary emphasis in English and a heart for community service, I was looking for a way to translate all of my interests into a practical approach. I looked locally and applied to the Berrien Springs Community Library. I pitched several ideas for summer reading, writing, and literacy workshops as well as a newsletter and marketing strategy for promoting programs. I was also able to develop and implement a Crisis Communication Plan for the library, train the staff, and present to the Board of Directors. The opportunities and experience that this placement has afforded me have been truly wonderful and I thank God for the chance to serve Him in a public environment."

“I completed my semester long internship at Glamour Magazine in New York City and still cannot believe that this is where God led me. I worked in the Accessories Editorial Department. As a junior at Andrews University majoring in English and minoring in Journalism, this opportunity has been a dream come true!  Daily, I applied what I have learned in leadership to my internship, and I appreciate that it allows me to function within my strength areas – activator, achiever, discipline, communicator, and achiever. I am flourishing in an occupation that draws on what I do best and truly enjoy having that opportunity.” Read more

"My summer internship at Essence magazine was an unforgettable experience and definitely a result of great alumni networking!  I interned in the online department for Essence magazine (Essence.com).  I was able to work with the site’s content management system, uploading multiple forms of content to the website each day. I was privileged to converse with web designers, producers, photographers, and even a few celebrities!  It definitely allowed me to see what wearing many hats within a particular company department entails. From chatting with gospel artists about their upcoming album to assisting a web developer on a web design in Photoshop, my internship was truly the experience of a lifetime, and I would recommend it to anyone ready to learn transferrable skills within the world of media and web production!"
