    MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

The MA program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Andrews University focuses on the all-around growth of the student. It offers training in essential therapeutic skills, backed by scientific theory and hands-on practice. The curriculum is inclusive of traditional and modern techniques and emphasizes real-world experience. It aims to prepare students to work with various backgrounds and needs, encouraging adaptability and continuous learning in both common development and specific disorders.

PROGRAM LENGTH

  • 6 semesters to complete.
  • Fall semester is the preferred start date, but flexible entry is allowed.
  • Accepts 10-12 students each year

  3. Interview: If selected, applicant will be interviewed by the Program coordinator.
  4. Decision: Committee votes on applicant's fit based on interview and overall profile.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Official transcripts: Submit transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
  • Recommendations: Two recommendations required from professionals (e.g., advisors, professors, employers), with at least one being academic and excluding relatives.
  • Resume: Provide information about employment, research, or special projects.
  • Minimum GPA: A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.60 is required.
  • Statement of Purpose: 500-word Statement of Purpose outlining objectives (why study at Andrews University?), goals (personal, professional and academic) and future plans.

TRAINING

  • Clinical: Students in the program receive integrated assessment and counseling skills training throughout various courses in preparation for practicum and internship, with a focus on accurate diagnosis, reliable assessment, and evidence-based interventions. Practicum takes place at the Andrews Community Counseling Center, and before graduation, all students must complete a one-year internship in community mental health settings.
  • Research: The program promotes early research engagement, faculty mentorship, and a scientific focus on lifelong learning, practice, and multicultural aspects. Students can contribute to faculty-led research projects through Independent Study-Research Project courses, with support from the Office of Research and Creative Scholarship.
