• Low rate of reporting of cases. - As a result of the secrecy, only a fraction of the incest cases ever get reported by families or the victims.
• The magnitude of the problem of incest continues to be underestimated.
• One piece of research suggested that 22% of sexual abuse histories were never reported. This is thought to be largely to to lack of inquiry.
• Incest histories before 1980 are lacking because researchers were reluctant to inquire.
