The students will have a chance to actually search the library stacks in search of designated books in order to practice what they learned during the first half of the workshop. It should be a fun experience based on interaction and games. (Includes videos)

Description: A manageable research project (or paper) starts with a manageable topic. This hands-on and interactive workshop will present a short video demonstrating why it is important to limit the topic of a paper and how to accomplish that. The students will have the opportunity to use an online mind-map to develop a relevant research topic.

Description: The objective of this class is to show students tools ENCORE provides which assists users to effectively find materials and sources to write papers and do research. Monthly town hall meetings are held for each hallway at Meier Hall. Resident advisors will guide conversation around the residence hall living-learning theme for the month. Be present and ready to engage with and learn from your peers!

The topics of these worships will align with monthly themes under Lamson's overall theme for this school year, which is Bloom & Grow.

Student Dean Life Skills give the opportunity for a student dean to share a skill they have learned that has helped them through their undergraduate experience. Going into the work force can be scary, especially the interview process. Join us as one of our student deans gives some pointers on the interview process. What are questions you should ask? How should you dress? Join us to find out.

In our last Student Dean Life Skills program, student dean Autumn Bange will share with us how to budget. Understanding how much to save, prioritizing spending, and understanding what may not be a neccessity are all things that Autumn will address in this program.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder manifests itself in many different ways in our lives. Sometimes we carry PTSD with us and don't know until something triggers the traumatic moment. Join our embedded counselor to learn more about PTSD.

During our Town Hall meetings, residents have the opportunity to commune with other students and address different issues and questions. In our November Town Hall we will be addressing nutrition. Students will be able to discuss nutrition on our campus as well as worldwide and how to apply what they have learned.

Description: In the first half of this hands-on workshop, we will present how and why subject classification systems are developed and will teach how to use the one the library adopts (Library of Congress). The students will have a chance to actually search the library stacks in search of designated books in order to practice what they learned during the first half of the workshop. It should be a fun experience based on interaction and games. (Includes videos)

Description: A manageable research project (or paper) starts with a manageable topic. This hands-on and interactive workshop will present a short video demonstrating why it is important to limit the topic of a paper and how to accomplish that. The students will have the opportunity to use an online mind-map to develop a relevant research topic.

Oct. 27: “Finding Books, Ebooks, Articles and More Using the Library’s Online Catalog”
Description: The objective of this class is to show students tools ENCORE provides which assists users to effectively find materials and sources to write papers and do research. The students will learn how to limit their search by type of material, date, language, etc. The students will follow the class by doing an exercise.

Nov. 3: “Using Databases to Find Relevant and Scholarly Articles”
Description: This hands-on workshop will show how users can decide which databases are relevant to their research and how to effectively use them to find relevant and scholarly articles. Participants will also learn how to use the many useful features and tools provided by the Databases to enhance their research capabilities, such citations, search modes, create alert, thesaurus and others.

Nov. 10: “Determining a Reliable Source Using the Internet”
Description: The objective of this practical workshop is to demonstrate how the students can evaluate and determine the reliability of the sources found in the World Wide Web using the CAARP method and worksheet. They will analyze a document posted in the Internet using criteria such as currency, authority, accuracy, relevance and purpose.

Following our six months apart, the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra is pleased to return for its first public performance of the fall 2020 semester titled “Awakening.” The concert will only be available to view as an internet livestream video, but we still very much look forward to welcoming you as an audience member, wherever you’re located.

Each of the five compositions on this concert can be interpreted to have varying relations to the concept of awakening, and that can be said for our ensemble and its members as well, now returning to action. Our first piece is a nod to infancy and the nurturing reassurances that we rely on with our family members (and faith). This opening work, titled "Mother and Child," was composed in 1943 by American composer William Grant Still. Our second composition begins with the delicate rays of the sun reflecting gently on the Danube River, perhaps depicting a beautiful morning in the city of Vienna, Austria. Instantly recognizable, this famous waltz by Johann Strauss II titled "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" will sparkle with radiance and joy. The third piece on our program is especially rousing—titled "Jota," it is a dance excerpt from Spanish composer Manuel de Falla’s ballet "The Three-Cornered Hat."

Following an intermission break, we will continue our musical adventure with a composition that was first titled “Finland Awakes” when composer Jean Sibelius wrote it in 1899. He initially composed it as a contribution to an exhibition that was illuminating Finnish traditions and history in an effort to resist oppression by the neighboring Russian Empire. Now known by the title "Finlandia," it is an inspiring example of courage and hope arising out of darker times. The fifth and final piece on our program is a depiction of an Easter weekend as envisioned by composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in his "Russian Easter Festival Overture." The piece begins with Russian Orthodox chant melodies, depicting priests leading an Easter service, then transitions toward the sound of bells typical of Russian churches. As the music builds, it culminates in a more public and festive Easter celebration.

Symphony Orchestra

The Andrews University Symphony Orchestra is the core ensemble of the orchestral program at Andrews University. In addition to their current series at the Howard Performing Arts Center, the Symphony Orchestra travels within the Great Lakes region as well as internationally. Since 2006, the Orchestra has performed in Italy, Austria, Germany, France, the Philippines and Costa Rica.
