Welcome
We appreciate your interest in our vibrant, diverse and committed community of faith which seeks to advance excellence in ministry around the world.
The Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary was voted into existence in 1936 by action of the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It operated in Washington, D.C. until it was transferred to Berrien Springs, Michigan, in 1960. Here it became a school of the newly established Andrews University. The Seminary is fully accredited by The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.
The primary mission of the Seminary is to prepare ministers for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This is done especially by means of the 3-year Master of Divinity program. There are also 2-year master’s programs in Youth Ministry and in Pastoral Ministry. In addition, the Seminary offers the 1-2 year academic Master of Arts in Religion program. Five doctoral programs are also offered: Doctor of Biblical and Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology, Doctor of Ministry, Doctor of Philosophy in Religion, and Doctor of Theology.
The Seminary has seven departments: Biblical Archaeology, Christian Ministry, Church History, New Testament, Old Testament, Theology and Christian Philosophy, and World Mission. It also offers learning opportunities to students through several centers and institutes such as: Continuing Education for Ministry, Hispanic Ministry, Church Ministry, Youth Evangelism, Greek Manuscript Research, Archaeology [with its Siegfried. H. Horn Archaeological Museum], and Jewish Studies. In addition, the Seminary works in close association with the North American Division Evangelism Institute [NADEI], and with the [General Conference’s] Seventh-day Adventist Institute of World Mission, Global Church Growth Research Center, and Center for Global Urban Mission.
Seminary students come from all inhabited continents of the world. We have one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse seminary campuses in North America. About 400 students take courses here. Another 500 attend Seminary classes offered by extension in several locations in North America, Inter-America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. All of these lead to full degrees.
More than half of the 50-member Seminary faculty were born overseas or worked for the SDA Church outside North America. As experts in their respective fields, they are ready to challenge and mentor you to become ministers and thought leaders of the church in North America and beyond.
We are delighted to have you visit. If we can be of further help, please let us know.
