Biography

Don May is assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, associate professor of photography for the photographic imaging program in the College of Technology, and director of student retention for the Student Success Team at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Mich. He joined the faculty in 1979.

Born in Rochester, NY, May received his bachelor of fine arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1979. In 1987, he completed his master of arts in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in communication, education and technology from Andrews University.

May has served at Andrews University during his entire career. He has been an instructor, assistant and associate professor of photography.

In 1992, May received the Academic Advisor Award and the Student Association Teacher of the Year award from Andrews University’s student body and administration faculty. He also received the Zapara Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Applied Arts in 1992. In 1998, he received the Student Association Teacher of the Year award for the second time.

May has been instrumental in planning, directing, and sponsoring photographic tours to such places as Hawaii, Scandinavia, Mexico, New Zealand, Kenya, and the Galapagos Islands. In 1986, he served as an advisor for photography on an archaeological dig in Tell El Umeiri, Jordan. Beginning in 2002, he headed up several educational study tours to Tanzania, where students earn general education credit as well as experience the global classroom.

May is a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association and Nikon Professional Services. He has worked with several photo seminars and served as a judge for photographic contests in the Southwestern Michigan area.

He is married to Rebecca Haug May.
